Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2017-11-30
Serious post rock. Complex busy drums underneath pretty chiming vibes, slow phrased bass tones, atmospheric overall. Very vibraphone-bells heavy which makes for an overall chill, “bachelor pad” feel as the drums, despite being all over the place, still retain that swallowed tone that typifies this genre. For fans of Tortise, Godspeed, Do Make Say Think, or downtown avante jazz drumming.

1) (4:20) bright and cheery mathy upbeat drums, vibes in front with ethereal vocalizations 2) (6:46) very quiet fade in with synth, lots of vibes and bells, slowly builds with drums, ends quiet 3) (7:21) picks up quietly from previous with a subtle chugging drum beat and builds into a big post rock wankfest with the slowly phrased bass tones and bells/vibes 4) (8:44) bells/vibes looping and dense with some quiet synth, after 5 minutes the drums appear for a mindful pleasant feel 5) (0:52) brief interlude of bells/chimes 6) (7:09) vibes set a fast looping riff to start, bells and drums 7) (5:23) gamelan feel with some different percussion and a looping hypnotic pace, after 3 min some soaring guitar brings this back to Chicago 8) (8:10) starts with an almost Philip Glass looping bells/vibes, quickly launches into epic post-rock with super busy drums as per expected 9) (3:00) drums are more rock’ish, still got looping percussion and slow phrased vibes though, but seems like a pedestal for the drums
