JOEL HARRISON & LORENZO FELICIATI: Holy Abyss
Cuneiform, 2012

POSTMODERN JAZZ – Hard to classify, this is surreal, dark-hued music from a really intriguing quintet co-led by American guitarist Harrison and Italian bassist Feliciati, but also featuring sonic explorer Cuong Vu on trumpet. There’s a lot of fusion in here, and some free improvisation, but also references to bop and even country music. It all stays cohesive somehow, making this a strange but worthwhile journey.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6, 7

1. 7:46 – mournful ballad: calm trumpet, stinging guitar, surges at end
2. 8:12 – starts as quiet creep/folksy lope; gets loud & gritty, falls back
3. 5:30 – upbeat jazzy groove sets up free-ranging improv, thrusting trumpet
4. 8:09 – dark shadows, slow and echoing, turns into creepy group improv
5. 3:32 – uptempo gallop; flirts with bop, falls into surrealism, bounces back
6. 8:33 – melodic, with thumping groove one side and daydreams on the other
7. 8:21 – light, rolling 5/4 tune with dark undertones, trumpet & guitar stretch
8. 3:06 – brooding echoes, slumps into open space, hangs from a bass line
