ARTURO SANDOVAL: Dear Diz
Concord, 2012
BIG BAND BEBOP – Trumpet master Sandoval pays tribute to Dizzy Gillespie with very slick but quite tasty arrangements. The big band draws from diverse and unexpected corners, from hardcore boppers to contemporary lite-jazz to Hollywood actors (Andy Garcia on bongos). Entertaining stuff, especially when all those ace soloists do their thing.

1. 8:19 – starts out light & cute, hits stride about halfway, solos burn red-hot
2. 6:48 – easy-rolling latin groove with vibes, solos take it uptempo
3. 5:18 – happy latin breeze, organ keeps a lid on, but trumpet jumps on it
4. 6:04 – low-key bluesy lope with strings, organ solo, cool trumpet
5. 7:11 – fast bebop: tenor sax conversation, jabbing trumpet, brisk riffs
6. 5:09 – airy bounce: clarinet and muted trumpet float merrily on top
7. 6:00 – just string quartet and trumpet: lush ballad treatment of “Con Alma”
8. 6:52 – really nice: rolling latin jazz, sophisticated arrangement, brief vocal
9. 6:15 – hip, finger-snapping bop stroll: horn solos go for old-school cool
10. 7:23 – strong latin groove, horns have swagger over slick band riffs
