ROB MAZUREK PULSAR QUARTET: Stellar Pulsations
Delmark, 2012

POSTMODERN JAZZ – Mazurek, an incredibly prolific cornetist who is practically a jazz scene unto himself, brings us a great set of small-group pieces with personnel drawn from his Exploding Star Orchestra. The compositions are free-falling but focused, with lots of variety from track to track. Mazurek’s playing recalls the masters of hard bop in one moment, then hits a jagged-edged trill in the next, while the band goes from explosive energy to brooding introspection. Really excellent.

All very good. Try any. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7

1. 7:45 – pounding rhythm: melodic cornet, piano goes nuts over dark pulse
2. 4:41 – gentle ballad with a steely edge, muted cornet, 2nd half a dark sway
3. 8:37 – billowing: a tumbling tumult of drums, edgy horn, scattered piano
4. 6:30 – uptempo stomp & roll, melodic approach over a rock-hard groove
5. 5:07 – low and brooding, muted cornet over a nonstop, repeated bass riff
6. 8:12 – twisty over quick, bustling drums: piano/cornet dig in & spin out
7. 6:43 – relaxed balladry: a lovely drifting song, very melodic and dreamy
