DAVID WEISS & POINT OF DEPARTURE: Venture Inward
Posi-Tone, 2013

POSTBOP – Oh my, this is good. Trumpeter David Weiss and friends explore some excellent late-60s material, including two tracks each by Andrew Hill and the little-known but excellent composer Charles Moore. Weiss and JD Allen (tenor sax) sound fantastic together, weaving relaxed lines around urgent rhythmic pressure led by drummer Jamire Williams. All while Nir Felder’s guitar lies on top like a soft blanket. Really compelling music that’s a joy to listen to. Play it!

All excellent! Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6

1. 11:37 – urgent rhythmic drive; dancing horn dialogue into undulating trumpet solo; sneaky, soulful sax and too-cool guitar
2. 7:20 – horn-riff theme & conversational, cool-strutting solos, floating drums
3. 16:19 – twisty theme, then great relaxed, questioning horn solos that wind around the rhythm; eases up in the middle, 3-minute drum solo
4. 7:19 – curious, wrinkly theme; easygoing solos & jumpy drums, good guitar
5. 6:09 – angular ballad: tight horn harmony, guitar treads softly, fine sax
6. 8:25 – jittery theme & drums; quick horns ride the beat, guitar looks inward
