CHRISTIAN McBRIDE TRIO: Out Here

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Bass star McBride introduces a new working trio, with young guns Christian sands on piano and Ulysses Owens, Jr. on drums. They share a sense of technical precision but also a feel for the roots: there’s a strong undercurrent of blues or soul in even the most polite numbers. Very nice stuff, lively but doesn’t rock the boat.

1. 8:25 – starts out low ‘n’ sneaky, then a nice bluesy stroll with a little grease
2. 4:03 – upbeat, down-home stomp: a bebop revival meeting
3. 8:27 – midtempo uptown ballad, very polite and subdued, quietly catchy
4. 6:42 – very relaxed, spare, gentle stroll: middle section finds the blues
5. 9:20 – darkly flowing take on “My Favorite Things” has mystery & drama
6. 7:41 – classy, easygoing standard; strolls along nicely, good drums
7. 5:39 – speedy, agile bebop standard with a surprisingly breezy lilt
8. 8:28 – serene ballad; bowed bass melody, dreamy piano solo
9. 6:18 – upbeat soul classic: a good time strut, shines in the solos, silly vocal
