Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Blue Record|
Acoustic Indie. Soulful. Slow. Male vox. Acoustic Guitar. Gentle 60s aesthetic. Band started by kiwi Ruban Nielson, formerly of The Mint Chicks. Hard to tell from this EP, but the band actually has three members--guitarist/vocalist, bassist, and drummer. Blue Record contains acoustic versions of three songs from their second album, II, and a couple of covers. All good, except maybe #5. No FCCs detected. --eme o.
1. Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark) [2:42] - Pleasant. Shins-y.
*2. Faded in the Morning [3:30] A bit moody but hopeful in a way. Me’Shell Ndegeocello-y.
*3. So Good at Being in Trouble [3:31] R&B-esque, like a ‘rock-ier’ John Legend. (The original, non-acoustic, version of the song is similar, but more like 60s soul, Otis Redding-esque.)
4. Swing Lo Magellan [2:48] Falsetto voice, bluesy guitar. (Song originally by The Dirty Projectors)
5. Puttin’ it Down [2:45] Staccato guitar playing, mostly normal tempo (for this album, which translates to s-l-o-w). Brief section of Chipmunks-style sped up tape. (Song originally by Beck)
