MAINSTREAM JAZZ COMBO
These four musicians teamed up 20 years ago on Bernstein’s “Somethin’s Burnin.” This reunion features compositions by each member, plus some standards and pop songs as well. Cobb (now 86) has played with just about everyone: Coltrane, Cannonball, Dizzy, Dinah & Sarah, Wes, and dozens more. The cat even played on Miles’ masterpiece, “Kind of Blue.”

All instrumentals. No FCC issues.

1 ** Mid-tempo. Guitar is cool & elegant. Cobb’s tom-toms & cymbals are perfect. (8:09)
2 * Mid-tempo. Soulful tune, originally on tenor sax, interpreted on piano & guitar. (6:31)
3 * Mid-tempo, snappy. Early 60s movie theme. Good playing all around. (6:38)
4 Very fast. Famous melody played too fast on guitar to enjoy. (5:55)
5 ** Mid-slow. Somewhat modern Mehldau composition. Great piano & drums. (8:25)
6 Mid-fast. Piano & guitar tradeoff leads. Drums keep it moving along briskly. (5:05)
7 Very slow ballad. Pretty melody, but just a bit too sleepy. (4:32)
8 Mid-slow. Bernstein reprises a “cocktail jazz” standard made famous by Joe Pass. (5:32)
9 Mid-tempo to start, speeds up. Swingin’ number, mostly guitar and piano. (7:14)
10 * Very fast. Toe tapping, head bopping improv all around. Everyone works hard. (5:41)
