Ulver – ATGCLVLSSCAP (Jester Records)

Norwegian avant-rock/metal legends are back with a monumental masterpiece spanning every style they’ve flirted with in the past—mostly a doomy epic krautrock atmosphere prevails, but there’s hints of folk, jazz, ambient; lush textures and stark rhythms throughout. Jams were culled from an extensive backlog of live recordings and enhanced with dense layers of post-production.
RIYL Godspeed, Russian Circles, Emperor, Ennio Morricone, epic-ass shit

1.(7:39) Church bells and synth drones, drifts into vocal wall-of-sound loops
2. (4:50) an otherwise unassuming pretty post-rock song suddenly turns triumphant with huge crazy drum fills
3. (6:44) mostly a percussion feature, a gentle drone backdrop accompanies steady yet intensely intricate drums
4. (9:48)*** SICK AS FUCK YO PLAY THIS ONE PLAY IT PLAY IT first a sorta krautrock bass loop gets hella epic before (spoiler alert) BOOM a one-chord 90s metal groove thunders along, they’re clearly having fun here <<vocalist / synth player told me this is his favorite track too :-0 >>
5. (3:16) weirdly glitchy and practically atonal ambient interlude
6. (7:43)** ambient for a bit before another epic krautrock bass groove builds into an epic major-key salute-to-the-sun rock’n’roll yoga jam with heavily layered but restrained whispered chanting
7. (8:35) synth-driven plodding soundscape, like Tangerine Dream scoring an unmade Herzog doc
8. (9:21)* beeeautiful vaguely liturgic drone, features haunting muted trumpet and staticky radio samples
9. (4:53) like Tangerine Dream falling asleep on their synths
10. (5:56) THE BALLAD. Austere plodding debbie-downer from 2000’s Perdition City album
11. (9:01) just kidding here’s THE BALLAD, sad piano w/ gentle congas and guitar with crooning about pain and healing
12. (2:13) blurry kosmische Kubrick-inspired space drone
