Beethoven’s Op. 18, published in 1801, consisted of his first six string quartets, composed between 1798 and 1800 to fulfill a commission for Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz, employer of B’s friend, the violinist Karl Amenda. They demonstrate his mastery of the classical string quartet as developed by Haydn and Mozart. The publication numbering within the opus doesn’t correspond to the composition order. Beethoven composed the quartets in the order 3, 1, 2, 5, 6, 4. No.4 in C Minor clearly departs from his predecessors’ conservative model in its intensity and dark expression. All the quartets conform to the structure of Allegro-Adagio (or Andante), Menuet (or scherzo) and Allegro, except for No. 5, whose two interior mvmts are quick dances. Like Haydn and late Mozart, B demands expert playing from each participant, allotting equal power to their solo and inter-dependent functions. When B wished to experiment with forms, he wrote piano sonatas. When he felt he had mastered a form, he wrote string quartets. No. 6, however, has a distinct emotional progress, moving briskly at its opening, then in the last mvmt, perhaps betraying some of the grief B would suffer with his hearing loss.
