JAZZ: SMALL COMBO

Here’s a solid set of contemporary instrumental jazz featuring mostly originals by the leader plus a few old gems. The quartet includes electric hollow-body guitar, acoustic piano, upright bass and drums. Gerald Clayton plays piano. (We have a couple of his albums and several of the Clayton Brothers.)

All instrumental. No FCC issues.

1 Mid-tempo. Breezy melody on guitar. Piano takes a solo at about 2/3 of the way. (6:46)
2 Slow peaceful ballad. Mostly on guitar. A piano solo early on. Light drums & bass. (7:05)
3 ** Slow intro, then fast. Lively. Showy guitar & piano; energetic rhythm section. (6:00)
4 * Slow love song with Spanish romanticism. Very nice piano solo. (5:24)
5 ** Mid-tempo. A bit bluesy. Good guitar and piano solos. (5:04)
6 Mid-tempo. Peaceful & relaxing but hardly a lullaby (too fast & rhythmic for that). (6:11)
7 ** Mid-fast. Written by trumpeter Woody Shaw. Joyous, energetic, and soulful. (6:34)
8 Slow. Pretty 50s movie theme rec’d by Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, others. (6:54)
9 ** Fast. Complex & sophisticated take on a 1940s Kurt Weill / Ira Gershwin tune. (5:57)
