Paradise Valley is a surprise 7” that Liz Harris of Grouper released a few days before Christmas. Both tracks employ nothing more than voice and fingerpicked guitar, and this simplicity makes their emotional pull especially far-reaching. There’s a quiet optimism throughout, a change from Harris’ usual tones. Calm, purifying, and endlessly beautiful, this might be her best work yet.

1. (5:04) *** Headache—Droning intro and soft guitar. Plodding, with declarative vocals that slowly fade away.
2. (2:54) **** I’m Clean Now—Opens with a hushed “I’m clean now.” Dreamy guitar and indistinct vocals bathed in reverb.
