Chopin’s (1810-1849) late works continue to express his melodic gift and ability to convey intense emotions. The musical structural devices become more intricate and innovative, but this need not concern the non-professional listener. The Barcarolle‘s continuous barcarolle rocking rhythm is overlaid with beautiful melody, sometimes sad, sometimes energetic, sometimes reflecting on a happy past.. The Mazurkas, Op. 59 start with a thoughtful 1st, a dancing 2nd, and impassioned 3rd. The Polonaise begins in drama, quiet echo, melancholy, followed by brave shows, love song and return of melancholy and heroic climax. The Nocturnes are dreamy, exploring widely the world of harmonic change while retaining melodic appeal. The Op. 63 Mazurkas move from folk music, to elegy to poetic intensity. The Waltzes are in turn humorous, then melancholic with an impassioned middle, and finally gaily and nobly explorative. The final, unfinished Mazurka melts the heart with sadness.
