Album Review

Fans of Bill Callahan (Smog), Songs Ohia, Mark Kozelek, deep piped singer songwriter stuff that’s remarkable, stands out in the genre. Great songwriting, no self indulgent pap nor obscure references. This guy is from Mississippi, a second cousin of William Faulkner no less, but transplanted to SF about 15 years ago to record with the late great Tim Mooney at the infamous Closer Studios, then relocated to Ireland after Tim (and Yuma Joe) passed suddenly, sadly. For fans of solid songs: Greg Brown, Loudin Wainwright, Bruce Cockburn. Tucsonans, desert heat stroke writers Howe Gelb/Giant Sand, Dan Stuart, Billy Sedylmeyer, Al Perry also come to mind. Striking stuff, beautiful, play with fellow afile denizen Peter Oren. Reminds me that I have a soul rotting away inside of me I should bring outside, water occasionally.

1)* (5:03) chill, nice twang guitars appear with the sparse drums and bass, subtle fem/male backups later 2)* (3:08) upbeat rock song, simple chords 3)* (4:05) nice simple, sad stuff about life, love “I know that I am breaking down, can feel it in my bones” 4) FCC “shit” at very end (3:06), bummer cuz its one of the best, a cool rock song, some nice guitar tones 5) (4:02) simple slow, they include the studio count-offf, nice touch, piano appears bigly 6) (3:42) nice upbeat feel, brushed drums type feel 7)FCC “fuckin” shame cuz great song (4:11) simple drum beat, cool guitar sounds, almost poppy feel in melodies, throws in a classic lick (name escapes me) 8)* (4:19) pleasant song, poppy hooks “we are all in this together”, positive message, female backs, great 9) (3:56) cool tremolo guitar hook, a good feel, arpeggio type picking, full band with good beat, drums 10)** (5:32) deserty western tone, “think I’m scared of girls, maybe, but I’m not afraid of you, you wanna scare me cling to me no matter what I do”, great lovelorn song
