Invasive Species - “Invasive Species”



Invasive Species is a percussion duo from the Sacramento region of Northern California. They make interesting and textured percussive music through their collaboration and interaction and self-describe it as “dense and sparse . . . dialogues weaving in and out of both convention and other-worldly exploration . . . pure spontaneous energy.”

“1 . . “ - 5:15 - first 2min (almost) are driving beat which then morphs into percussive abstraction with shakers and cool sounds; very open ended and airy vibe. Weird squeaking sounds almost sound like horns around 3:30.
“2. .” - 10:21 - fast paced percussion starts this long song off. Quick fast energetic drums rock out until about 3:45 where it slows down a bit, the snares cut out, and it’s tom energy. Around 4:30 the chaotic rimshots come in and take up space. Fun yet serious vibe. Really slows down at about 6min in and the cymbals come in and lead to strange feedback type sounds and more spaced out toms. Stays somewhat “chill” toward the end.
“3. . .” - chaotic and higher pitched drums come in right away; stays uptempo intense and action packed until about 2:41 where things drop out and some type of snare sound comes back in - almost sounds like wasps buzzing around - intense but not aggressive. Last minute or so gets really interesting after the buzzing snare fades out.
“4 . . . .” - 4:41 - another intense opening snare and cymbal jam; this one feels a little groovier than the other ones; keeps the intensity up until about 3:10 and then it slows down a bit and other percussion gets sprinkled in a bit; sounds like people rummaging through a box of rattles and tools, in a good way. The cymbal that comes in right at the end is killer.
“5 . . . . .” - 7:08 - slower start on this one - different than the other tracks - gets funky at about 1:30 - very sick and feels like it stands out as different than the other tracks. Lots of tom action and percussive snare type sounds; at about 5:22 some interesting squeaky sounds come in that sound like a saxophone but I have no idea what they are. Refreshing after a lot of percussion. More horn sounds at the end. Abstract but not aggressive. Like this one the best so far.
“6 . . . . . .” - 5:05 - starts mid tempo and funky. Cool cymbal action in there early on adds nice texture. Cool drum patterns give way to weird sounds at about a minute in. Cool percussive tones at about 3min in - sound like wooden percussion.
