Young'uns probably haven't encountered too many (or any) dot matrix printers but they used to be the high-tech printing mechanism. Hey, we have one in the library annex to print the CD labels! Pixel-sized hammers hit paper through inked-ribbon, forming letters as the printing head moves back and forth. All of this makes for a pleasant combination of percussive clicking and whirring. And depending on what letters/strings you print, the pitch and rhythms vary. You can get some idea of the correspondence between sound and characters printed by listening to the CD and looking in the liner notes at parts of the print patterns. The User creates text files to print on one or more printers, programs to synchronize everything, then starts the printing, and records the results. Stereo effects are especially fine as left-right panning emulates the movement of the printing head(s). The "symphony" appellation applies as all of the tracks flow into each other in a continuous print mix. Technology is always most artistically used when abused.

1. Sparse - very little printed - and clunky
