One of the more amazing heavy rock/metal records of 2003. This is an all instrumental band from Chicago that create beautiful (mostly because of the guitar tone) yet very heavy rock music. Their sound is hard to describe but it has elements of Isis, Godflesh, and Mogwai. Their songs are long, take their time, sometimes are melodic and beautiful and others are head banging huge guitar chugs repeated until your neck is tired. They have a HUGE sound. The promo sheet used a great phrase to describe this band. “Glacial heaviness”.
1. Starts with quiet guitar which goes on for the first minute. Then in one instant you are hit with a huge slow sound. A sad, melodic and even catchy guitar. The track gets quiet a couple more times and every time the band returns with an even heavier riff.
**2. Wow. Repetitive huge riffs that slowly change by getting more complicated and heavier. The rhythm section is very tight.
**3. More melodic with an obvious nod to Godflesh.
**4. One off the few short tracks. I just love that something can be so pretty and so heavy at the same time. More of a indie rock sound that metal on this track.
5. Folky with the first minute+ being very quiet. Never gets heavy.
6. Big, slow, heavy riff. When the track speeds up it gets even heavier. The track mellows out for the last 4 minutes.
Amazing stuff -mph
