Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend

Interesting Hammond organ centered instrumentals, some are jaw droppingly beautiful, others leave me bewildered. How to describe this?…The one-sheet says “Nine passionate instrumentals (and one twisted barbershop quartet for good measure!) reveal a hearty debut of lovely waltzes of grandeur, furious heel-stomping Mexican dances, melancholic ballads, frightening escapades into ancient oriental exotica, and deeply psychological psychedelia”. While typically one-sheet overstated, this description fares better than what I can do justice (moi?! at a loss for words?!), though I somehow missed the Mexican dance. It’s the result of an organist and percussionist duo under the production of Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Dylan, Daniel Lanois, Emmylou Harris). Pretty trippy stuff, like exotica/lounge music for the 22nd century. Leaves me scratching my head, altogether amazed, confused, seduced. Fans of Quintron, Tom Waits, and Brian Eno.

1) carnival waltz feel, Hammond centered
2) 70’s epic organ rock feel somehow
3) slower ¾ romantic waltz
4) trippy dark traditional feel, then kicks into a strange eastern 200bpm thing at the end
5) slow swingy sexy pretty, pretty piano drama
6) slow brushed drums with searingly beautiful piano production, this is the “jaw dropper”, quiet, hypnotic
7) carnival waltz feel again
8) similar to track 6, it’s the piano production, a la Brian Eno/Harold Budd that works so incredibly well
9) plain old trippy, slow treated synth with slowed drums and trippy sounds
10) brief, lofi “barber shop quartet” piece
