Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2005-07-22
Super cool accessible avante compositions that incorporate traditional eastern/japanese sounds of the Kodo and percussion with spooky deep production, looping experimental noise synths, chill female vocals in japanese (if any) and overall ambient dark artistry. Sounds like something 4AD coming out of a Japanese Buddhist temple. Moments remind me of Dead Can Dance, but only fleeting. This is heady stuff more deserving a place at the Yerba Buena than say the Fillmore. Best thing is that this is listenable, enjoyable, and not just an excercise in experimental composition. Beautiful stuff.

1) sparseness, sci fi tones and kodo and chill fem vocs
2) trippiness: subliminal cymbals and synths, a long spring, kodo, turns darker and spooky, strange treated vocs appear after ~5 min, unknown language, and percussion figures heavily building into a rhythmic near-jam, really cool, then dissolves in a chill manner, worth the length
3) begins sparse and dark with female vocs, decidedly eastern and spooky
4) very sparse and dark/spooky, with bowed Kodo
5) briefer, another dark sparse one, this time the Japanese fem vocs figure prominently
6) slow build sparseness, slow mindful rhythm and density amasses ~7minutes in
7) more sparse building collage art, gets very sparse ~7 minutes but then fem vocs appear and a dark wall of dense near-noise builds up and free jazzy drums and noise guitar join in 8) very ambient, fem vocs appear late in japanese
