V/A Nao Wave (Man Recordings)
Who would have thought that there was such amazing No Wave, post punk, and odd Devo influenced electro-rock going on in Brazil from 1982-88?? That’s what this is, a collection of some obscure art rock, no wave and odd pop from Brazil during the mid-80s. I’d say these bands are more new wave than no wave but that might be splitting hairs. The influences are wide including more standard new wave, like Gary Numan and Devo and even some psychedelic sounds. Unlike a lot of American No Wave the funk and reggae influences are no there. Instead you’ll find some Trapacalia influence (track 2 could be a Tom Ze track) and some sounds like that of XTC.
1. Electronic poppy new wave. A bit trippy in that 80s computer sounds way. Jangle-y guitar over keyboards with new wave vocals. Very much like some Gary Numan.
**2. Hand drums, danceable, catchy and a bit strange. This reminds me a lot of Tom Ze without the Brazilian folk sounds. The vocals sound exactly like Tom Ze.
3. Goofy, sample of soccer games, manic vocals and some traditional Brazilian percussion.
4. Slight funky in that A Certain Ratio sort of way but heavy pop new wave influences.
5. Less rock and more electronic. Soft Cell comes to mind. Keyboard new wave with simple beat.
6. Slow, darker, and somewhat minimal. Female vocals. The track doesn’t ever really get going.
**7. Pop rock that sad and reminds me a lot of early Tears for Fears.
**8. A bit more up beat with cool guitar jangle.
**9. Post punk sounds. Like a Brazilian Swell Maps. The guitar solo is a bit of a surprise.
**10. Some unique sounding percussion and odd pace. Female vocals. The track that sounds most no wave. Strange keyboards, minimal half spoken vocals and driving bass.
**11. Driving bass and vocals that sound almost like they are French and not Portuguese. Noisy guitar but it’s in the background.
**12. Angular with dual angry female vocals. Somewhat of a simple rhythm section and short. Not unlike Liliput.
**13. A bit more aggressive not unlike Killing Joke.
14. Arty rock like XTC.
Great stuff. -mph
