Fresh interpretations of Mingus tunes, performed by the LCJO with Wynton Marsalis at the helm. A professionally executed session with some ace soloing and plenty of space to savor Mingus' wonderful pieces. A sweeping '60s sound, lots of swingy themes, and Mingus' trademark jump-cuts (sudden passages at a fast tempo, like holes in the music). Pick a track; you won't go wrong.

For more of the same, with more brashness and abandon, check out the recent Mingus-orchestra collection (filed under "[COLL]: I Am Three")

1- Midtempo swing
2- Suite that starts with a slinky crawl, later getting cinematic and romantic.
3- Mid/fast bouncy theme, then easygoing soloing space. Crazy piano solo!
4- Perky, angular Latin swing.
5- Mariachi-influenced, with solo trumpet declaration and slow bass solo early on. Then some easy swingy passages.
6- Stomping circus themes! Starts with brash intro and quiet passage; ends with the band laughing.
