V/A – High Mayhem Festival 2005

Experimental/Electronic/Noise – series of “remixes” of the entirety of a 3 day / 32 act experimental music festival in Santa Fe. These make me pretty happy, makes you wish you were there.

**1. Starts out with great 70s beach TV theme song tune. Some pretty fun bilingual Word Salad poetry. Drumming and storytelling! Flute and piano playing and brass. Some punk rock in the background. FCC – lots of the fuck word around 6 min in, but clean before that. After 8 minutes some more surrealist poem storytelling. Some more “surrealist shit” and some fast moody tool-guitar and chanting.

****2. Begins with drumming and keeps a background rhythm throughout. Sounds like some avant-guard jazz or classical with touches of electronics and mechanics. Transposed and pitch-shifted vocal samples 5.5 min in and there-on. Very pretty at 7 minutes! Then some talk of equinoxes. Nice!

3. A mix that involves pieces from all the acts at the festival, formulaically pieced together by mad scientist math/logic. Very chaotic and cacophonous and not very coherent as a result. Not that that’s necessarily a terribly damning thing to say about this sort of music, but sometimes you’d rather have a unified vision to your mayhem, yeah?

4. Bird sounds in a creepy as fuck Aviary. Chanting about Angel-headed Hipsters burning and some brass & beats. And then a lot like a funk grungy dj set. I can’t really hear if they use any FCCs in the chanting, and probably no one else will either.

***5. Starts out with some saucy guitar and some free-jazzy improvising. Weird breathy vocal part. And more samples, the crazy bilingual wordsalad and surrealist talking sampled in the first track. Some bells and psych-y stuff. Outro with a guy talking retrospectively about the fest.
