Straight jazz, all upbeat and bouncy. Herbie Nichols is a celebrated contemporary of Thelonious Monk. This stuff stays inside the lines, presenting a healthy late-bop atmosphere. Lots of swingy high energy to the pieces. Krystall turns in some nice sax solos on 1 and 4.

See the Herbie Nichols Project for a more contemporary take on Nicols' work.

Marty Krystall (sax), Hugh Schick (piano, trumpet on 7), Brenton Banks (violin on 3, piano on 7), Jack Bone (bass), Barry Saperstein (drums)

1- Mid/fast, with cute fluttery theme.
2- Fast.
3- Jaunty piano theme. Violin solo.
4- Mid/fast. Upbeat and swingy.
5- Quick and upbeat. Not a trio.
6- Mid/fast cascading theme,
7- Melodramatic intro, into a free-flowing sax/drums duet that gets wild. Then a fast low-key piano vamp w/Spanish trumpet. (Not written by Nichols; this is from "Carmen," the Bizet opera.)
