Free jazz: Local guy Jim Ryan on sax and flute, featured in two different trios. Energetic jazzy feel throughout, with the spotlight mostly on Ryan. Improvised pieces in digestible bits (many tracks are just a few minutes long).
(Technically, these are two separate CDs, released simultaneously. Ryan is planning others with midwest and east coast versions of the trio.)
DISK ONE -- OAKLAND: Scott Looney (piano), Stephen Flinn (drums)
- Fast, gruff start. Gets aggressive later.
- Fast but calm, meditative
- Playful high notes, mid/fast. Gets into harder digging with scurrying piano
- Quiet pingy start. Builds up about halfway, then a calm, slow flow
- Fast but sparse
- Flute, a kind of calm mystery air
- Quiet start into a low-key, dark flow.
- Cautious, mid/fast.
- Big fast attack
- Tangly and fairly fast, gets pretty intense
DISK TWO -- PORTLAND: Robert Jones (bass), Andrew Wilshusen (drums)
- Midtempo thumping; the band declares its entrance, then eases up a bit. Ends abruptly.
- Bowed bass & drums intro, into mostly mid/fast trio work. Gets almost swingy near the end.
- Low-key, slowish but rich sax. Builds up a bit later.
- w/flute, mid/fast, easygoing
- Tumbling, mid/fast
- Mid/fast, fairly aggressive
- Fast and spare; builds densit as it goes
- Groaning bass/cymbals, whispering sax. Ghostly. Ends w/faster sax
- Mid/fast, scrabbly
- Flute, a calm drum-circle feel
