Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2007-10-23
Local duo who play a desperate twangy folk with ultra dark themes, sickness. Proof that great lyrics, a powerful vocal delivery and simple guitar can go a long way. Production is bit more lush than their previous, incorporating very subtle Hammond organ and not so subtle piano and fiddle and is reminiscent at times of Neil Young ca. “American Stars and Bars”. Songs ebb and flow, lyrics come in bulleted packages, phrases and one line can slay. Probably the best duo to come out of SF in a long long time. Mixed up at Prairie Sun in Cotati where Tom Waits does all his work.

1) starts with an epic duet/a capela feel but builds with guitar then full band into a mid paced folk rock tone
2) what they do best, simple songsmithing with upbeat strumming, subtle Hammond organ goes a long way
3) simple café folk feel for first half, guitar finger picking + vocs, sad somber and dark, then midway picks up, still minor keyed but drums, fiddle etc
4) dark, “typical” for this band feel, awesome
5) harmonica always makes it sad, combined with piano, violin and you’ve got a heartbreaker
