JANE IRA BLOOM: Mental Weather
Outline, 2008

MODERN JAZZ SUITE – The graceful arcs and slippery themes that comprise this nine-part suite seem to beckon for a choreographer. Bloom’s beautiful, crystal-clear soprano saxophone flutters nimbly through shifting rhythms and lyrical meditations, spiked occasionally with live electronics for a surreal accent, while drummer Matt Wilson tosses and rolls the suite’s brightly-drawn structures like a juggler.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6

1. 5:27 – slow, stately ballad, all soft curves
2. 6:10 – active, dancelike sound, carefully constructed patterns
3. 6:13 – playful, furtive theme; propulsive solos over changing rhythms
4. 4:21 – lopsided theme into vigorous chugging with electronic accents
5. 5:12 – cool slippery groove with interesting chord cycle, sudden downshift
6. 3:49 – complex and speedy, electronics on sax; tumbling piano solo
7. 5:56 – slow ballad: fragile intro, melancholy sax, lovely brushed drums
8. 7:10 – rippling melody falls into a bright jumble, quietly creeping middle
9. 3:32 – solo sax, meanders through a ballad
