CHARLES LLOYD QUARTET: Rabo de Nube
ECM, 2008

Adventurous, bop-based but fluid modern jazz by iconic saxophonist Lloyd and an excellent new quartet, recorded in concert in Switzerland. Pianist Jason Moran's oblique harmonic sense meshes well with Lloyd's flights of fancy, and the rhythm duo of Reuben Rogers & Eric Harland show why they keep turning up in bands together. Long tracks give everybody a chance to stretch out. Easily recommended.

Great stuff. Try any track!

1. 14:43 – fluttery intro, dusky modern bop with quieter, free-flowing middle
2. 10:15 – solo bass intro; rambling spiritual sound, deep & moving. Nice!
3. 14:33 – Lloyd on flute: gentle ballad, then upbeat and funky; great piano!
4. 11:38 – Lloyd on tarogato (Hungarian clarinet): tense, exotic, mysterious
5. 4:01 – nifty neo-stride piano solo, then quirky duet with sax flows into...
6. 12:17 – happy bop, great solos from everybody (long bass & drum solos)
7. 7:36 – calming ballad, very soulful, flows gently
