COLDWORKER - "Rotting Paradise" CD (Relapse)
Swedish grindcore at its finest with a few melodic death metal sounds thrown in. Fast, tight, and heavy. The band contains formers members of NASUM, PHOBOS, RUIN, PROJECT HATE and a few others and was formed by the ex-drummer of NASUM after their singer was killed in the tsunami in 2004. They add a few death metal sounds to the Swedish grindcore sounds of bands like NASUM, ROTTEN SOUND, and SAYYADINA. Somehow keeping it fast and heavy without sacrificing melody.
1. A steamroller. Sort of about demons/zombies/the undead rising up to take over the ugliness that humans have created. Changes speeds.
**2. Medium paced riff before kicking into speedy brutal grind. There is a melodic chorus that is very catchy.
3. Busy with lots of ideas thrown into this 2.5 minute track. About dealing with drug addiction. Some slow, some fast, some groove.
4. Mid-paced headbanging fun before speeding up.
5. Pummeling death metal sound. Classic metal guitar solo.
6. Slow groove. Does eventually speed up. Has MISERY INDEX type breakdown.
7. Fast pummeling. Marching breakdown.
8. Bass and drum intro that sounds like punk. Eventually turns into speedy grind.
9. Slower and heavy. Never speeds up too much. Does have a simple faster hardcore sound during the 2nd half of the track. OK, it does speed up towards the end.
**10. Faster and a bit messy. Two good "ugh" ("ooogh"?) from the singer. Slow simple heavy breakdown.
**11. Maybe the fastest track? Guitar solo.
12. Bursts of speed. Extended breakdown which ends the song.
Really good stuff. -mph
