AARON PARKS: Invisible Cinema
Blue Note, 2008

MODERN JAZZ – An intriguing major-label debut from this 24-year old pianist. Parks establishes a unique identity right from the start, with a light touch and enigmatic, mirage-like harmonies. His tunes tend to begin with simple melodic themes, but soon morph into flowing explorations or tightly wound spirals, crafted by a bright, fluid quartet.

All very good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7, 8

1. 5:41 – light, propulsive snap: rolling melody embroidered w/upbeat patterns
2. 9:46 – gentle, pensive, builds strength, bright and flowing in the middle
3. 6:21 – suspenseful, cinematic tension with a rock touch; solos dig nervously
4. 2:47 – mysterious walking groove: simple melody builds and repeats
5. 2:54 – solo piano, enigmatic and flowing, nostalgic touches
6. 8:11 – disconnected phrases, shifting chords; active solos, plodding ending
7. 2:45 – walking interlude: folksy melody, country touches, sliding guitar
8. 9:34 – moody forward motion with Balkan touch; heroic guitar, tense drums
9. 4:53 – very pretty song, as warm and peaceful as a hug
10. 2:55 – solo piano, calm and nostalgic, a soft landing
