TEDDY CHARLES: Dances With Bulls
Smalls, 2009

MODERN JAZZ – Vibraphonist Teddy Charles, who dropped out of the New York scene in the 1960s after forging a formidable reputation as a forward-thinking player, returns with a nifty sextet disc. The band has a unique sound, drawing heavily from Charles Mingus but also referencing modern bop, ‘50s cool, and even a touch of free jazz on #1.

* * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, maybe 6

1. 07:12 – scattered fragments fall into place, slouches and shuffles in pieces
2. 14:12 – Mingus piece: bass intro, slow lazy groove, solos take their time
3. 08:27 – cool swinger, nice ‘n’ friendly, easygoing round of solos
4. 07:24 – upbeat jam, unusual harmonies keep it slightly off balance
5. 10:30 – a cool breeze, relaxed with lyrical vibes, bright flute
6. 06:05 – straight bop bounce, uptempo with flute
