DAVID BINNEY: Third Occasion
Mythology, 2009

MODERN JAZZ – Warm, thoughtful, highly engaging original music for quartet. Binney’s inquisitive alto sax leads, but the wonderful supporting cast (Craig Taborn, Scott Colley, Brian Blade) makes these tunes really live and breathe. Close listening is rewarded. An additional brass section is wielded like a secret weapon, brought in at strategic moments to kick the tunes into a gracefully uplifting mode. Very nice.

David Binney - alto Sax
Craig Taborn - piano
Scott Colley - bass
Brian Blade - drums

Brass Section: Ambrose Akinmusire, Brad Mason, Corey King, Andy Hunter

* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 6, 8

2. 10:08 – warm, calmly undluating: pointillist piano and intricate sax solo
3. 4:21 – soft, deliberate ballad: slightly dissonant, like a nagging thought
4. 14:53 – low and urgent, like a foot chase; sharply stylized sax solo, then some exquisite trio work, dissipates and re-forms.
5. 1:15 – solo sax interlude, tightly packed with twists & turns
6. 10:35 – relaxed and pensive with a lovely bass solo and softly lyrical sax
7. 6:34 – lively, bubbling: bright sax solo, piano arcs and scribbles.
8. 12:36 – cerebral and dignified, a little detached: piano spins a delicate web, introspective sax, final section seems carved from stone.
