HAL GALPER: Art-Work
Origin, 2009

MODERN/AVANT JAZZ – Great trio of adventurous veteran players (Galper, piano; Reggie Workman, bass; Rashied Ali, drums) in a loose, jamming live set, much of it based on standard ballads but taken to another dimension. Really shows the linkages between free jazz and the bop “tradition.” Highly advanced playing is both familiar and startling.

* * * * | All very impressive! Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 7

1. 9:50 – quick jam: piano chords everywhere, bashing drums, calm bass solo
2. 10:02 – scattered midtempo: a ballad in constant, elusive motion
3. 8:09 – classic tone poem, very soft with amorphous edges, drifts out & back
4. 9:55 – speedy and expansive, roller-coaster twists and turns, busy solos
5. 9:17 – roaming, fractured midtempo: well-known ballad is unrecognizable
6. 9:25 – relaxed, billowing tune; gauzy smoke wafts around a tender melody
7. 9:35 – free-flowing midtempo, teeming with energy, wanders hither and yon
