HAILEY NISWANGER: Confeddie
self-released, 2009

HARD BOP – The debut release by Niswanger (pronounced “NICE-wonger”), a 19 year old saxophonist originally from Oregon, in a quartet with fellow students from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. She sticks to alto horn on the disc in a set loaded with tricky modern-jazz classics, and gets to show off both her fast-fingered technical chops and a confident, inventive improvisational voice. She’s off to a good start; I look forward to watching her grow over time.

* * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 8

1. 5:46 – squirrelly duo theme into a solid sax swing; delicate piano solo.
2. 7:20 – aching tune: piano unspools long strings; sax solo really sings
3. 4:27 – punchy original tune: speedy with long, twisting melodic lines
4. 7:59 – relaxed ballad: warm, welcoming sound with fine, lyrical sax solo
5. 5:30 – lilting 3/4 swing: piano bounces, then sax takes off with it
6. 5:34 – tough-edged swing, midtempo but with a firm thrust
7. 7:39 – upbeat, airy classic: busy bass, jamming sax, jaunty piano, odd end
8. 6:20 – quick and breezy: solos are energetic and twisty; drum/bass duet
