JIM ROTONDI: Blues for Brother Ray
Posi-Tone, 2009

SOUL-JAZZ - This tribute to the late great Ray Charles brims with love and drips with soul. Rotondi cut his teeth in Charles’ big band – and while he doesn’t try to imitate that iconic sound here, the spirit of Charles’s music easily merges with his own postbop style. The band breezes through seven prime cuts from Charles’ repertoire and one catchy original (#3). But while the solos are lively and fetching, there’s a forced stiffness in some of the rhythms that undermines their charm. A couple more greasy jams like #7 wouldn’t have hurt.

* * * | Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 6, 7

1. 6:09 – upbeat boogaloo groove, rolls smoothly with happy solos all around
2. 5:59 – steady glide: very nice trumpet solo, but stiff rhythm kills it for me
3. 5:12 – original tribute tune, catchy w/nice Latinized groove and cool attitude
4. 5:44 – breezy version of a song usually played slow: solos surf the groove
5. 7:00 – straight-up and swinging, tasty trumpet solo in the middle
6. 7:25 – relaxed and bluesy, trumpet carries the tune w/class and eloquence
7. 8:22 – easy-swinging blues, a real nice jam and the solos really feel it
8. 6:06 – straight up boppin’, another fast take on a usually slow number
