TONY PASSARELL: The Path
Prescott, 2008

POSTBOP/AVANT-GARDE – Quintet out of Sacramento. Both the musical conception and the low-fi recording give it a strong 1960s vibe. They wear Thelonious Monk on there sleeve in tracks 3-5, but I hear other reference points too: Dolphy, Coltrane, Coleman, Ra. Good stuff.

Tony Passarell - piano & alto sax
Scott Anderson - tenor sax
Clark Goodloe - tenor sax & piano
Harley White, Jr. - bass
Alex Jenkins - drums

* * * * | Fo’s Picks: Try any track.

1. 5:50 – dramatic, slouched intro; piano throws out note clusters while saxes poke around, then streamlined propulsion; ends abruptly
2. 6:54 – striding groove with an African flavor, like a Pharoah Sanders thing; sax is firm and in tune with the spirits
3. 7:33 – odd chord voicings from piano in staccato rhythms picked up by the saxes; freeform break, then chugs on a twisted repetitive groove
4. 6:19 – “Round Midnight,” smeared on a grimy film-noir sidewalk in the rain
5. 6:48 – upbeat, Monkish jump theme; goes its own way, sliding around on slick drums and playful piano
