If you like danceable pop or rpm, PLAY.THIS.NOW. Reporter is an electro/dance pop trio from Portland. I saw these guys play earlier this summer and they rocked it - the floor was packed with happy, dancing people. Beautiful, emotive fem vox, synth keys and beats, electric guitar. Indie/lo-fi ethics applied to new wave/disco-based electro. They are soft, humble and playful where crystal castles is hard, intimidating and dictatorial. Album and songs have good range, you can hear everything from italo-disco to new wave to industrial to indie to electronica influences. This CD is an amazing dance party end-to-end, so much fun it could have been the soundtrack to this summer. The only drawback is their stubbornness in having some songs run long. That, boys and girls, is how you build vaunted indie cred.

1. *6:02 mid/fast. starts chill and spare, with sweet fem vox that echoes and gets hushed at times, laconic surf guitar. Synth beeps and heavy drum loops start ~2:00 in, giving way to disco @ 3:00. Catchy but a bit drawn out.
2. **4:46 fast. Starts w/ techno melody, bassline via electric guitar, sampled fem vox. At 0:40, in comes the build-up: heavy techno bassline, neat background bells, echoed fem vox. Requisite vocoder starts at midway point, giving way to another buildup and funky techno breakdown. A gem.
3. **2:22 FCC (repeated): "We'll make the fucking planets..." mid. 4 on the floor driving disco beats with dark 80s new wave/industrial sensibility. Fem vox are delicate in some places, haunting and distorted in others.
4. **5:37 chill for first 0:50, then here comes the new wave. Buildups, breakdowns, vocoder.
5. *2:27 fast and frantic instrumental interlude. World percussion, guitar, industrial synth keys.
6. ***5:18 fast, driving, playful. so glad we finally got their cd in so I can stop playing this off of youtube. Jangly surf guitar a la smiths, cure. Happy bassline and fem vox create a tension btw balearic, new wave, rockin out. Gets very new order toward the end.
7. **6:08 fast, driving, melodic, catchy. techno synth keys, hand claps. For crystal castles fans who need the ringing in their ears to die down a bit. Fem vox are seductive but tasteful... "you are the one, there is no other". Could be shorter.
8. **6:24 fast. Fem vox echoes and distorts at points, lyrics are more intricate than other tracks, instrumentation is more spare and restrained. Synth hand claps, jangly guitar. Funky bassline cuts in and out.
9. *4:32 mid. Mostly instrumental, sampled fem vox sounds more like an instrument. Deep house piano riffs, synth shimmers, easygoing bassline. Starts building up @2:40.
