WAYNE WALLACE LATIN JAZZ QUINTET: To Hear from There
Patois, 2011

LATIN JAZZ – One of the best releases yet from Wallace, a top Bay Area trombonist/educator. The album roams across a wide range of afro-Latin jazz styles, all delivered with clean edges and assured finesse. Trombone is the only horn here, but Wallace isn’t alone in front: he brings in three more ‘bones for some key tracks, along with solid vocalists Kenny Washington and Bobi Cespedes. The six original tunes are especially nice.

Wayne Wallace, Jeff Cressman, Natalie Cressman, Dave Martell : trombones
Murray Low : piano
Bavid Belove : bass
Paul van Wageningen: drums
Michael Spiro : percussion
Kenny Washington, Bobi Céspedes : vocals

All tracks good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11

1. 5:36 – upbeat Cuban groove sashays along; strong solos, everything clicks
2. 4:50 – four trombones in a happy place: a mix of ballroom and street party
3. 6:48 – classic tune with lilting/scatting Kenny Washington vocal and a breezy air
4. 6:17 – beautiful, subdued: glides softly, chorus adds a bit of strut in second half
5. 5:23 – smiling descarga jam, solos slide over a frictionless mambo wiggle
6. 6:00 – fantastic, exotic Afro-Cuban sway; sweet lullaby for trombones & bass
7. 5:51 – tender ballad, slow and soft, with a beautiful trombone sound
8. 5:37 – supple version of classic tune: strong Bobi Cespedes vocal & trombones
9. 5:43 – spiritual start; strong Afro-Cuban groove with shifting time signatures
10. 5:00 – catchy tune in honor of pianist Bebo Valdes; fun vocals & nice piano
11. 6:34 – modernized mambo turns breezy; second half kicks into a groove
