KIMBERLY GORDON ORGAN TRIO: Sunday
The Sirens, 2011

JAZZ VOCALS – This vocal/organ/guitar combo has a standing gig at the Green Mill in Chicago, playing late every Sunday night. So it’s no surprise that this disc has the intimate feel of old friends jamming at a neighborhood bar. Gordon’s delivery is sassy and quirky – a blend of Sarah Vaughan & Ella Fitzgerald with a touch of Phoebe Snow – and it can get a bit overheated, but her cohorts stay in the pocket.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 10

1. 4:48 – upbeat but easygoing bounce, laid-back solos
2. 5:48 – a lively bounce on this standard, some tricky vocal twists
3. 6:12 – relaxed pace: strong vocal stretches out, mellow guitar
4. 5:42 – happy bounce: playful vocal and organ, scatting end
5. 6:10 – surprisingly aggressive tackle of bossa nova standard, much scatting
6. 3:37 – relaxed tempo, but rough ‘n’ tumble vocals are all over it
7. 6:20 – midtempo bop tune: throwaway lyric gives way to hard scatting
8. 4:57 – another midtempo bounce: classic vox, nice guitar
9. 4:46 – Kermit the Frog’s song: relatively hushed and very nicely done
10. 3:50 – upbeat swinging groove: nice scat/solo interplay
