JASON KAO HWANG / EDGE: Crossroads Unseen
Euonymous, 2011

AVANT-GARDE – The third release from Hwang’s impressive quartet (violin/cornet/bass/drums) has bursts of high excitement and slow, strained passages, aggressive soloing and intricate ensemble work in five detailed, thoroughly explored sonic landscapes. As before, Hwang and bassist Ken Filiano make the biggest impact, but everybody sounds good. Check out EDGE’s other discs in the KZSU library for more.

Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5

1. 10:12 – bracing theme, strong pulse: violin slashes, cornet warbles, bass solo is big and bold, drums flop around like a fish

2. 12:05 – episodic: haunted-house intro, dancing walk, tense boppish groove; buzzing cornet & violin solos, wide-open bass, speedy drums

3. 10:34 – pained violin leads a slow trudge: solo turns by drums & bass stretch out into darkness, but cornet & violin explore the interior

4. 11:21 – slow, eerie sound with growling cornet resonance and jittery strings; bass solo goes deep, viola tiptoes on a highwire, open percussion

5. 10:29 – positive and negative energy: totters between uptempo bop-inspired walking grooves and slower free exploration in the solos
