JEFF WILLIAMS: Another Time
Whirlwind, 2011

MODERN JAZZ – Drummer Jeff Williams has a very long and distinguished resume as a side player, but he hasn’t recorded under his own name since the mid-1990s. This fine, fresh and very modern quartet date with trumpet and alto sax (no chord instruments) has a compelling mix of adventure and groove; it feels open and free but has strong rhythmic direction. All originals: five by Williams, everybody else adds one tune. Good stuff from outside the mainstream.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7

1. 6:23 – horns ride circular riff: moaning interplay, analytical sax, cool trumpet
2. 7:48 – relaxed with a lumpy, lazy swing: sax gets dense, oblique bass solo
3. 5:04 – hard to pin down: midtempo and lyrical, but with long, slippery lines
4. 8:01 – simple repeating theme, alternately slow and perky, really nice solos
5. 7:19 – exotic sound, odd shifting meter: very loose solos have an avant feel
6. 5:28 – appealing but slippery melody: warm, breezy rhythm & relaxed solos
7. 6:41 – intellectual sound: horns stick close together, quiet bass & horn solos
8. 5:39 – off-balance intro, then a relaxed walking feel
