This set of 18 songs pays tribute to Love and to Italy, by way of Neapolitan and various operatic and film composers who have paid homage to these spirits. Some will recognize the third selection, “Parla piu piano,” as the theme from The Godfather. No. 15 “Volare” dominated popular song charts in the 1960s. Leoncavallo’s “Mattinata” (no. 2) was a familiar vehicle for the great lyric tenors, Mario Lanza and Fritz Wunderlich. Several songs test the high range of the tenor voice, such as “Rondino al nido” (No. 16) with its sustained pianissimo. The opening number, “Caruso,” was supposedly inspired by the Sorrento hotel where the noted tenor spent some of his last days. “Il Libro Dell’amore” (No. 18) translates a popular rock ‘n roll lyric into an intimate expression of romance. The CD title, Dolce Vita, has immediate associations with the film by Federico Fellini, in which Anita Ekberg cavorted in Rome’s Trevi Fountain. Essentially, this CD is an Italian, Sorrento-based postcard of affection for the eternal verities of Love and the love of song.
