numerous competitions, including the Concert Artists Guild Internat’l Competition in NYC. She is Professor of Flute at James Madison University. This CD’s first work, by Amirov, is based on folk melodies from Azerbaijan. Amirov’s father was a celebrated Azeri folk singer. The pieces exhibit Azeri chromanticism and musical modes (selection of scale tones). The 2nd work is a transcription of a piano piece by Chaminade, the first woman composer to be awarded the French Légien d’Honneur. Automne was a frequently requested encore at her piano recitals. The mvmts of the Karg-Elert piece, familiar within the flute canon, reflect programmatic, nostalgic, and spiritual influence. Karg-Elert was an organist; his compositions combine Baroque and Impressionist styles. Frazelle’s piece incorporates bird calls, and traditional folk songs and melodies while evoking the beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains. Frazelle has been commissioned to compose for Yo-Yo Ma, cellist, and Emmanuel Ax, pianist, among others. Chandler provides detailed descriptions of each piece on this CD.
