Pianist Craig Swanson explores alternative ways of realizing the 10 movements of J.S. Bach’s French Suite No. 4 in E-flat Major, BWV 815. Each listener may choose which musical alteration best satisfies his taste. The recording (July/August 2018) was played on a Yamaha C6 grand. The project means to provide new possibilities that reside even within the “fixed” notes of the Bach score. Swanson calls the effort a “mix ‘n’ match” experience.
The mood of the dance styles represented in the French Suites can be summarized as follows: *Praeludium speaks for itself; Allemande - German dance of moderate tempo; Courante running dance from the French style; Sarabande - courtly, sad dance from Spain; Gavotte - courtly French dance, usually in marked, dotted rhythm; Menuet - courtly European dance, elegant in character; Air - melody. usually sweet in character; Gigue - a jig, a spirited, final dance in quick tempo
