LUIS PERDOMO: Universal Mind RKM, 2012 MODERN JAZZ – This sturdy trio with pianist Perdomo, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Jack DeJohnette starts from a mainstream jazz position but really asserts itself with dynamic solos that balance inward contemplation and forward thrust. Gorgeous recording quality brings out lots of detail, highlighting their chemistry. Very impressive! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 11 1. 7:57 – hard postbop swing: piano swoops & soars, strong bass, agile drums 2. 7:17 – pensive tune, serious drive: solos balance tenderness & muscularity 3. 5:50 – tight trio: hot drums trade off with and push the thoughtful piano/bass 4. 6:19 – exotic drums as piano develops a deep, beautifully rich melodic line 5. 5:58 – rolling trio, introspective but vibrant, bittersweet piano & bass solos 6. 5:39 – starts as lush piano/drum duet fantasy, turns into unspooling rhythm 7. 8:23 – swinging stroll turned upside-down, piano acrobatics, snappy rhythm 8. 5:12 – pretty waltzing tune: piano flies gracefully, falls into repetitive ending 9. 6:05 – spiralling tune with shifting tempo, downward slides, bold piano 10. 6:27 – tender ballad: warm, dappled light; first solo piano, then trio 11. 8:15 – impressionist piano vs. hard drums: really gets rolling in the middle [ Fo ] - February 2012 | ||
