One of the performers at our 2012 Day of Noise, Diaz-Infante is a multi-instrumental sound artist whose work has gained him international acclaim. He’s a pro, let’s leave it at that. The praise is well-deserved, as there is no aspect of avant-garde bizarreness that he doesn’t master. The songs here range from meditative, resonating drones to atonal-yet-beautiful melodic wanderings. Guitar string scrapings, cassette hiss, a ritualistic yet free-form contempt for all harmonic logic—this is sure to please late-night DJs immensely. RIYL: The Talking Book, Matt Davignon, LA Lungs FCC Clean. My picks: 3, 4, 6, 11 1. Field recording of the train arriving to Embarcadero station 2. Looped sawing noise and distant satellite blipping 3. Slowly expanding resonance; echoing (maybe guitar?) buzzing; the sound a basement makes when it is sad 4. A gorgeous trickle of tones tumbling over each other. Some of the chiming is monotonous, other tones vary throughout 5. Wind chimes. Very brief track. 6. Dark, foreboding synth drone with some echoing clutter 7. Lush, hovering tones and repetitive stringed instrument strumming, not much variation but interesting textures 8. A few forgotten ominous chords barely suggested, wandering about in obscurity 9. Lilting and directionless bell tones, modest weirdness 10. Gradual crescendo of cyclical strings 11. Sounds like a prepared piano slowly falling apart. Beautiful. 12. Tinny backpack guitar chord strumming, distant and very repetitive with some gaping void-like ambient slowly emerging 13. Brief string plunking --Diego A |
