TODD CLOUSER’S A LOVE ELECTRIC: 20th Century Folk Selections
Royal Potato Family, 2012

JAZZ FUSION – This oddball set is difficult to describe. Guitarist Clouser takes tunes from sources as widespread as Nirvana, the Beastie Boys, the Velvet Undergound and Neil Young (and, yes, some folk songs too), and puts ‘em all through a psychedelic postmodern-jazz blender. But it’s mostly low-key and only vaguely swirly, only rarely busting out with energy, and otherwise hanging out in an introspective Bill Frisell-like world of atmosphere and emotion. It’s all quite good. Recommended for eclectic/instrumental rock sets as well as jazz.

Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 6, 7, 8

1. 4:28 – ‘60s ditty about Daly City trudges, gets spaced-bouncy in the middle
2. 6:01 – Buddy Holly tune takes it easy; Steven Bernstein reverb trumpet
3. 4:33 – Neil Young song is gentle, open, moody, sparkly like a drugged haze
4. 3:01 – quick-driving work song with some slow muddled breaks
5. 9:08 – steady, strolling Nirvana cover: trumpet and guitar take relaxed leads
6. 5:43 – clattery intro; classic VU melody shines through, gathers steam
7. 4:25 – the most rock-ish track: Beastie Boys tune sprawled and stoned
8. 5:51 – Pearl Jam track moves with weary optimism, gradually builds up
