PETER APPLEYARD & THE JAZZ GIANTS: The Lost 1974 Sessions Linus, 1974/2012 SWING – How this went unreleased for 38 years is baffling. What we have here is a big chunk of the Benny Goodman band, in an impromptu studio recording just days after a famed Carnegie Hall concert in 1974. It’s basically an all-star jam session: vibraphonist Appleyard is leader but sits out several tunes. The presentation is somewhat raw, with a squeaky piano pedal getting in the way and bits of studio chatter before each number (as separate tracks), but the music is really excellent. Peter Appleyard : vibraphone Hank Jones : piano Zoot Sims : tenor saxophone Slam Stewart : bass Bobby Hackett : cornet Urbie Green : trombone Mel Lewis : drums All good. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 8, 12, 14, 18 2. 8:29 – slow, bluesy medley of Ellington ballads, each with a different soloist 4. 9:20 – relaxed intro, then uptempo: gets real hot, everyone gets a solo 6. 5:06 – upbeat, loose swing: cute trombone solo, nice dialogue with sax 8. 4:34 – smoky quartet ballad: trumpet leads, piano breaks are excellent 10. 4:47 – another smoky quartet: trombone has lots and lots to say 12. 4:49 – breezy medium quartet, sax sounds great against the piano 14. 3:12 – trio bounce: great fun as Slam Stewart scats along with his bass 16. 3:25 – relaxed swing: cornet takes a nice bluesy turn 18. 2:46 – lovely piano solo, and the pedal magically stays quiet [ Fo ] - February 2012 |
