ADAM KROMELOW TRIO: Youngblood
Zoho, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – This piano trio has power and passion, blending postbop chops with indie-rock sensibilities. Be warned that Kromelow goes for big, overwhelming crescendos in almost every tune, but to my ears these have enough rhythmic drive to make them sound expansive and glorious rather than just loud or bombastic. The tunes are also refreshingly short, with nothing over six minutes. Worth a spin.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 8, 9

1. 3:59 – Great! uptempo drive: dark, churning chords and soaring breakouts
2. 4:24 – scattered piano falls in and out of a peppy swing, lots of free motion
3. 5:28 – feels like indie rock: strong theme, calm & steady, then forceful drive
4. 4:57 – Beatles tune: haunting piano over steady pulse; gets huge later on
5. 3:44 – very playful, improvisational version of a Thelonious Monk tune
6. 5:30 – Peter Gabriel tune: starts gently, then quick march, big crescendo
7. 4:40 – jazzy mood piece: gentle, meandering stroll, rich bass solo, rises up
8. 4:51 – laid-back melody, a streetcorner hang with abstracted interludes
9. 5:58 – fast: upbeat, driving riffs on a rock beat, good bass/piano solos
