MARSHALL GILKES: Sound Stories
Alternate Side, 2012

MODERN JAZZ – Gilkes is a trombonist with a hard-swinging sound and a generally sunny postbop style, his tunes switching easily between warm, flowing lyricism and driving force. He’s got a fine quintet on this CD featuring Donny McCaslin on tenor sax. 1/2, 3/4, and 8/9 are two-part tunes, but they also work OK as separate tracks.

Fo’s Picks: (1/2), 4, 6, 10… maybe (8/9) too

1. 6:32 – brisk postbop drive: sax burns it up, but 2nd half is gentle solo piano
2. 5:35 – part 2… relaxed; trombone gradually rises back to theme from #1
3. 3:44 – reflective/optimistic tune, walking pace: horns converse beautifully
4. 9:59 – upbeat, bustling sound: solos are alternately gentle and forceful
5. 6:41 – lyrical melody with a light, steady pulse and warm, comforting solos
6. 7:40 – jabbing theme; low-key trombone/sax solos each pick up steam
7. 6:54 – aching, bittersweet ballad, turns uplifting: trombone really sings
8. 3:07 – warm late-night flow; piano gets a chance to shine
9. 8:20 – part 2… serious sound, marches into bare emotions, candid solos
10. 6:41 – an upbeat march: rising joy from piano; trombone coasts on air
11. 9:30 – serene start, then dynamic with a hint of latin-jazz, busy horn solos
