Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) is known for Carnival of the Animals and Danse Macabre, but his melodious Sonata No. 1, like his piano concertos, is well worth a listen. Cesar Franck (1822-1890) was a noted organist and pianist as well as composer. His Sonata for Violin and Piano is one of the most popular in the literature. The harmonies float in glorious progressions and the melodies stay in memory. Ravel’s (1875-1937) Sonata (composed 1923-7) was inspired by jazz (rhythms) and by blues (harmonies and melodic twists).
1. (7:03) Saint-Saëns: Sonata No. 1, Violin/Piano, Op. 75, Allegro. Dramatic, noble, as clouds scud across a greying sky.
2. (5:20) Saint-Saëns: Sonata No. 1, Violin/Piano, Adagio. Warm in my cottage, I gaze on the garden and the fields beyond.
3. (4:13) Saint-Saëns: Sonata No. 1, Violin/Piano, Allegretto moderato. We trip about gaily, and are a bit tipsy.
4. (5:53) Saint-Saëns: Sonata No. 1, Violin/Piano, Allegro molto. Running as fast as I can, I spy the happily gurgling stream.
